Company Mission
The mission of Pearl Movement is to provide personal development and community-building opportunities for movers of all ages and levels of curiosity, comfort, and confidence.
We strive to polish and cultivate one’s movement practice to fit their unique needs by learning from historically Black dance forms and traditions. In a world and industry that often romanticizes chipping away at ourselves until we fit into a role, Pearl Movement’s goal is to build on the lived experience of the mover— resembling the creation process of a pearl.
Whether you are a lifelong dancer or a new mover aiming to connect with your body alongside others,
Pearl Movement serves you.
Founder
As the founder of Pearl Movement, Pearl Young brings over 20 years of dancing and over 10 years of dance education experience in Ballet, Scottish Dance, Modern, HipHop, Step, Traditional Jazz & Swing, and African & Caribbean Folkloric styles.
After learning and performing Pearl Primus’ “Strange Fruit”© in 2018, her work has consistently appreciated and demanded attention toward the Black history of dance. Through Pearl Movement, Pearl integrates her love for dance with her teaching career, camp counselor experience, and Bachelor’s degrees in Behavioral Neuroscience and Human Development at Tufts University to create a restorative and connective experience rooted in Black traditions.
